Crossword puzzles are now the number-one indoor pastime in the United States, more than 30 million Americans do crossword puzzles regularly!

The largest crossword puzzle ever constructed had 5,553 words!

Greeks, Romans, and other peoples had a kind of word game called the word square that would lead to the invention of the crossword puzzle many years later.

Then in 1913, an editor at a newspaper, the New York World, was constructing a word square for a puzzle page. But he decided to make a puzzle out of it by leaving the words for the readers to fill in. And instead of having the words read down the same as they read across, he let the “across” words form different words when read “down.” Called a “word-cross” at first, this was the world’s first crossword puzzle.

Crossword Puzzles software for making your own crossword puzzles. Making challenging puzzles can be a challenge in itself but not with the help of our nifty crossword software that be be used for free online.

Crossword Software – Creating the perfect Crossword Puzzle

There are many programs available on the web that will provide a user with crossword puzzles. Some websites tend to use a daily crossword system, sometimes created solely by human hand. But what many people might not realize is that often times, the crosswords they play are created through the use of crossword software. While there are various kinds of crossword software available on the web, they all tend to work in similar ways. They provide the maker of a crossword with an automated system for creating the crosswords they want.

Many individuals who solve crossword puzzles do not think about the amount of effort that goes into individuals creating these puzzles by hand. This is where crossword software comes in. All an individual needs to do for many of these programs is to input a list of words and clues. The program will then create a crossword out of the given words. With crossword software, the time required to make a crossword puzzle is reduced immensely. No more spending hours attempting to find a way to put the pieces of the puzzle together.

Some of these programs will not only allow users to create a crossword puzzle, but they will also create interactive crossword puzzles for use on the individual’s website. With countless people across the world who love to solve crossword puzzles, this can be an extremely effective means of drawing more traffic to the website.

As great as crossword software can be, there are also certain limitations to it. Some of these limitations are not the fault of the program, either. Users might input too many words or a combination of words that cannot be used together well enough to create a good looking crossword puzzle. This can cause a user to become frustrated and believe that it is simply the programs fault. This problem can easily be rectified by choosing a larger crossword puzzle size or through changing some of the words for the crossword. Sometimes, a user might also dislike the first crossword that the program creates for the given set of words and clues. Luckily, most crossword software is able to create many different crossword layouts for a given set of words and clues.

So for anyone seeking to create crossword puzzles for any type of occasion and for any reason, crossword software is definitely the best and most efficient way to create crossword puzzles.

Christmas Crossword Puzzles

Christmas crossword puzzles are a fond memory for many people. The happy memories of sitting in an elementary school classroom, doing Christmas crosswords as school begisn to wind down for Christmas break. The joy as math worksheets and spelling tests turn into arts and crafts and crossword puzzles. This is a feeling that some people wish to relive and that others wish to share with their children. While crossword puzzles in general are fun and enjoyable, there is just a special connection with Christmas crosswords which remind us of past Christmases, and they just seem more nostalgic than normal crosswords. There are a few different options to find these puzzles, everything from free pre-made ones, to books that can be bought, all the way to computer software to generate these puzzles on the fly.

Possibly one of the best options is to do a simple search for Christmas crosswords on your favorite search engine. There are tons of free crosswords available online that can be printed out at home. A lot of these sites are geared towards teachers, so these crosswords are perfect to share with children when they come to visit for the holidays. Even so adults looking for a relaxing way to pass the evenings leading up to Christmas are sure to enjoy these puzzles, and there are some websites out there that have Christmas crosswords aimed at adults.

There are other options too if no suitable crossword puzzle can be found. There are both free online crossword generators and software that has to be bought. Both options are a little bit more time consuming than using pre-made Christmas crosswords since the words and clues have to be thought up, but if a more challenging or personal crossword puzzle is needed, this is the way to go.

Crossword books however, have been around since the early ’20s, and have a huge range of themes. Books of Christmas crosswords can be found in most stores around the Christmas season, and online at any time of the year. Crossword puzzle books are probably the most convenient of all the options. The ability to grab the book and head out the door, or to just sit in a favorite chair is hard to match. While they certainly are not free or customizable like the other options, there are such a wide range of books available finding one to fit specific needs should not be too difficult or expensive.

A Tradition: Sunday Crossword Puzzles

Doing the crossword puzzle on a Sunday morning has become a tradition. These crossword puzzles evoke wonderfully lazy images of working on clues over morning coffee, or a reliable loved one who always chimes in on the clues that don’t come to mind. People who create crossword puzzles are formally called “cruciverbalists,” but what do we call our crossword puzzle enthusiasts?

The first crossword puzzles were created in the late 19th century, but by the early 20th century they were beginning to appear published in newspapers. The Boston Globe published its first crossword in 1917, and by the 1920s crosswords became a full-blown craze. Though a major publisher of crossword puzzles during our contemporary times, The New York Times was slow to hop on the bandwagon. Their staff opposed to crosswords, considering them a frivolous waste of newspaper space. It wasn’t until 1942 when the New York Times published its first crossword puzzle.

Now, the Ne York Times produces some of the most prestigious crossword puzzles available, including its Sunday crossword puzzles into the New York Times Magazine insert to the Sunday paper. The challenge of the puzzles are intended to scale up over the course of the week, with the Friday and Saturday crossword puzzles providing the most challenge. In The New York Times, the challenge of a crossword puzzle is denoted with stars, the greater number of stars, the greater the challenge. In addition to the Sunday crossword puzzles, The New York Times also provides an “alternative” puzzle on Sundays and the type of the puzzle changes every week. The author, or “cruciverbalist,” who holds the records for authoring the greatest number of Sunday crossword puzzles for the New York Times is Jack Luzzato, who single-handedly constructed 119 puzzles. In addition to the New York Times, the Sunday crossword puzzle is syndicated in over 300 other newspapers. The current In addition to the New York Times, other papers that famously produce Sunday crossword puzzles are The Los Angeles Times and USA Today, and The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal and even The Onion.

Often the clues to a crossword puzzle are quirky or indirect, adding to the challenge of the puzzle. The clues to a crossword puzzle may also all be connected by a single theme, such as around a holiday or a celebrity’s birthday. Sunday crossword puzzles are an iconic tradition in the United States.
